Bell Cultural Events Center

Our newest facility, the 40,000 square foot Bell Cultural Events Center, was opened for classes and the community in the fall of 2007. It is an acoustically-engineered masterpiece. The 541-seat Mabee Performing Arts Hall boasts the very best in sound environment, supported by a Yamaha M7CL digital sound mixing console, multi-track recording capabilities through Pro Tools, ETC computerized light board, and visual playback and projector for viewing DVDs, Power Point presentations and other multi-media on a drop-down screen on the stage. The building also has practice rooms and individual instruction areas in support of the high level of academic standards and has the most up-to-date technology for teaching, recording, and playback for students and teachers to use in classrooms, private lessons, rehearsals, and performances. The Black Box theatre, scene shop, Green Room, make-up room, and dressing rooms have expanded the abilities of the MNU Theatre Department for both training and performance.

Information for Parents

MidAmerica Nazarene University is a small college campus that has tremendous security for their dormitories.  All dormitories are highly secure and can only be entered with a pass key card, given to each camper as they arrive.  Each individual dorm room can be locked with a separate key.  An added bonus is that MNU is not located in a big city.  It is a very quiet oasis, with the exception of our incredible music the week that we arrive.  The dorms, cafeteria and music building are all located in a perfect triangle.  Walking from the dorm to the music building is about 50 yards.  The same is true for the cafeteria.

There is a boys dorm, a girls dorm, and separate floors reserved for our adult campers and families.  Campers may NOT visit the opposite sex dormitory.  Roommates are chosen by same sex and same age, as much as possible.  A security guard is on site 24 hours a day.  Counselors stay in the hall with the students, so there is always an adult presence.  MNU and MWROC have a strict “no drugs, alcohol or tobacco” policy and students will be sent home at the parents’ expense should any incident occur.  MWROC encourages a healthy work ethic and smart living.  MWROC strictly upholds the rules of MNU, as our host campus.

Our Camp Directors, Lisa and Brian, are both professional orchestra directors; and keeping students safe and secure is their first priority.  We also have a professional camp doctor, Doc Qin, who can help should any of our students feel ill.  Most of our camp counselors are professional teachers or college students studying to be music educators.  Students under the age of 18 are assigned to a counselor and must check in with the counselor several times a day.  The students are also escorted around the campus with the counselor to meals and for break times.  Strict curfew is usually not a problem with our students because we wear them out during the day.

Students who are flying in alone will need to make a reservation with our shuttle service that will take them straight to the welcome area of MNU.  It is possible that we may be able to help you coordinate a flying partner from your city if you ask us.  There may be a short wait for other MWROC students to join you on the shuttle.  The shuttle company is highly reputable and the Kansas City Airport has very small terminals, making coordination of pickups very manageable.  Students will be provided with emergency numbers for MWROC staff members to help them at the airport if the need arises.

As camp gets closer we will open a link for shuttle reservations to and from the airport.
