A Note to Campers & Parents of Campers

We understand that doing anything for the first time can feel exciting, nerve-wracking, and even a little overwhelming. Please know that your safety, well-being, and overall experience are among our highest priorities. From our dedicated leadership team, experienced counselors for 17 and unders, camp nurse, to our faculty, there is an entire community here to support you.

COMMUNITY AND CAMP EXPERIENCE

I’ve never been to camp before. Will I fit in?

Absolutely!

Every year, we welcome first-time campers from all over the world, and many arrive knowing no one. In practically no time at all, people are exchanging contact info, making plans to come back together the following year, and telling us they’ve found “their people.” As creative people, we are all so unique and different and don’t always “fit in.” But one of our favorite things about MWROC is how welcoming and supportive our community is. EVERYONE “fits in” just by virtue of being unique and different, everyone is there because they love music, and everyone wants to connect with others who feel like they do… that creates a bond almost immediately.

Whether you’re outgoing or shy, a seasoned performer or trying something new, you’ll find a welcoming community of people who share your love of music.

At MWROC, creating a safe, supportive environment where campers can explore, discover, create, and become their best selves is one of our highest priorities. It’s the very reason we do what we do.

What if I come alone and don’t know anyone?

You are not alone in feeling that way, and you would not be the first camper to arrive at MWROC with those exact concerns.

Every year, we welcome people who come on their own, unsure of what to expect and wondering if they’ll find their place. What we consistently see is that within a very short time, those same people are making music, sharing meals, and building friendships that often last far beyond camp.

One of the things that makes MWROC special is the culture of support among campers. This is not a competitive or judgment-focused environment. Campers tend to lift each other up, encourage one another, and celebrate growth at every level.

You don’t have to arrive knowing anyone. You just have to arrive. The rest tends to happen quickly.

What if I’m shy, anxious, homesick, or overwhelmed?

First of all, you’re not alone.

Many campers arrive feeling nervous about meeting new people, being away from home, trying something new, performing in front of others, or simply stepping into an unfamiliar environment. Those feelings are completely normal.

One of the things we’re most proud of at MWROC is the supportive community we’ve built. From our faculty and staff to our counselors and returning campers, you’ll be surrounded by people who genuinely want you to succeed and feel comfortable being yourself.

Every camper has access to experienced counselors who are there to help guide, encourage, and support them throughout the week. Whether you’re feeling homesick, overwhelmed, unsure of where to go next, or just need someone to talk to, there will always be someone available to help.

You never have to navigate camp alone.

In fact, some of our most confident returning campers will tell you they were nervous their first year too. The friendships, confidence, and sense of belonging that grow throughout the week are part of what makes the MWROC experience so special.

Being nervous doesn’t mean you shouldn’t come—it often means you’re about to do something meaningful, exciting, and outside your comfort zone. And that’s where some of the greatest growth happens.

Our goal is simple: to create a safe, welcoming environment where you can explore, discover, create, and become the musician—and person—you aspire to be.

Who can I talk to if I need help during camp?

You are never alone at MWROC.

Our counselors, faculty, camp nurse, staff, and leadership team are all here to support you throughout the week.

Whether you’re feeling homesick, overwhelmed, anxious, unwell, uncomfortable, or simply need someone to talk to, there will always be a trusted adult available to help.

Asking for help is encouraged, and we are committed to making sure every camper feels supported, respected, and cared for during their time at MWROC.

What skill level do I need to be?

MWROC welcomes a wide range of skill levels, from dedicated students and passionate hobbyists to professional musicians and educators.

Our placement audition helps us create ensembles and classes that are the best fit for your current experience and abilities. It’s not about being “good enough” to attend camp—it’s about helping you have the most rewarding experience possible.

If you’re passionate about learning and willing to challenge yourself, you’ll fit right in.

What if I’ve never played rock music before?

That’s perfectly okay!

Many campers come from classical, orchestral, jazz, folk, and other musical backgrounds. Introducing musicians to new styles and helping them expand their musical horizons is one of the things we love most.

Our faculty will help you develop the skills and techniques needed to succeed in a rock setting while building on the musical foundation you already have.

Can I attend MWROC if I play an acoustic instrument?

Absolutely!

MWROC is open to both acoustic and electric string players, as well as singers, guitarists, and bass players. You do not need an electric instrument to attend or participate fully.

Throughout the week, you’ll have opportunities to learn, perform, collaborate, and explore new musical possibilities regardless of which instrument you bring.

If you’re curious about electric strings but don’t currently own one, camp is also a great place to see, hear, and try electric instruments firsthand, since we’ll have a selection of instruments from Wood Violins for you to borrow during specific times during the week.

What if I‘m a singer and don’t play an instrument?

Wonderful—we love singers!

MWROC welcomes vocalists as full participants in the camp experience. Singers receive specialized coaching, perform in ensembles, collaborate with instrumentalists, and participate in workshops designed specifically for vocalists.

You do not need to play an instrument to attend and thrive at MWROC.

I’m nervous about performing. Do I have to perform solo?

No.

While there are opportunities for solos and featured performances, they are never required. Most campers perform as part of ensembles, choirs, bands, or group performances.

Our goal is to help you grow in confidence and enjoy the experience. You’ll be encouraged to step outside your comfort zone, but you’ll never be forced into a performance situation that isn’t right for you.

What if I’m afraid of making mistakes?

Then you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.

MWROC is a place for learning, growing, experimenting, and trying new things. Every musician—from first-time campers to seasoned professionals—makes mistakes. That’s not a sign of failure; it’s part of the learning process.

Our faculty and campers create an environment that is supportive, encouraging, and focused on growth rather than perfection.

What makes MWROC different from other music camps?

MWROC is much more than a music camp—it’s a community.

Founded by Mark Wood and Laura Kaye, MWROC combines world-class instruction, electrified strings, rock performance, vocal training, creativity, collaboration, and personal growth into one unforgettable experience.

Campers don’t just learn music. They gain confidence, form lasting friendships, discover new possibilities for themselves as artists, and become part of a supportive musical family that extends far beyond a single week each summer.

Many campers return year after year because of the connections they make, the inspiration they receive, and the feeling that they’ve found a place where they truly belong.

AGE REQUIREMENTS

How old do I need to be to attend camp?

MWROC welcomes a wide range of ages, from talented young musicians to adult hobbyists, professionals, and educators. Campers must be 13 years old by the fall of the school year in which MWROC takes place.

At what age do I need to attend with a parent or guardian?

Campers under a certain age may be required to attend with a parent or guardian. Please contact us for current requirements.

I’m an adult. Am I too old for camp?

Not at all!

One of the things that makes MWROC unique is its multi-generational community. Campers range from students to adults, retirees, educators, and professional musicians.

Whether you’re pursuing music as a career, returning to an instrument after many years away, or simply looking for an inspiring musical adventure, you’ll find others who share your enthusiasm.

You’re never too old to learn, grow, and rock out.

Can I accompany my child(ren) as a guest?

Parents and guardians are more than welcome to stay on campus with us as Registered Guardian campers! It’s a great way to connect with your child(ren), and share in all the great things they will be experiencing during the week!

Our Guardian Rate includes meals, lodging (double occupancy in our adult dorms), and nightly concert admission. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to attend classes or rehearsals with your child but in most cases, you will be allowed to sit in. Attendance to these events will be determined by space availability and camp management.

While there are no planned activities for parents/guardians that choose to attend MWROC, our campus is located very close to Kansas City, which is chock full of wonderful entertainment options such as museums, shopping, and more.

Many parents choose to attend camp alongside their child and often become part of the MWROC community themselves!

If you prefer to stay off campus, there are several hotels in the area that are within driving distance. You would not be able to have meals on campus with us, but all parents/guardians get 2 free tickets to the final concert.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

What if I need to bring medication?

MWROC has a dedicated camp nurse on site for the duration of camp to manage and distribute medications and assist with any health-related needs that may arise during the week.

Prior to camp, all attendees are required to complete a Confidential Medical Form, which helps our team understand any medical needs, allergies, medications, or accommodations that may require attention during camp. Families will also receive information about medication procedures and any required documentation.

Our goal is to ensure that medications are handled safely and that every camper receives the care and support they need while attending MWROC.

If you have specific medical concerns, allergies, or questions about accommodations, please contact us before camp. We’re happy to work with families to help ensure a safe, comfortable, and successful experience.

What if I have dietary restrictions or food allergies?

Prior to camp, attendees provide medical and dietary information through our Confidential Medical Form. We work closely with the campus dining team to accommodate dietary restrictions and food allergies whenever possible.

If you have specific concerns, please contact us before camp so we can discuss your needs and help ensure a comfortable and successful camp experience.

What if I get sick or injured at camp?

The health and well-being of our campers is one of our highest priorities.

In addition to having a dedicated camp nurse on site throughout the week, our staff and leadership team are available to assist with any health or safety concerns that may arise.

If a camper becomes ill, is injured, or requires additional care, we will take appropriate steps to ensure they receive the attention they need and communicate with parents or guardians when necessary.

What is MWROC’s policy on bullying, harassment, and discrimination?

MWROC is committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for every camper, faculty member, staff member, and family.

Bullying, harassment, discrimination, intimidation, sexual harassment, or inappropriate conduct of any kind will not be tolerated.

We believe every member of the MWROC community deserves to be treated with dignity, kindness, and respect, regardless of skill level, experience, background, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, age, disability, sex, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, or any other personal characteristic.

Our goal is to create a space where every participant feels safe to learn, grow, express themselves, take creative risks, and be fully accepted for who they are.

Any concerns regarding bullying, harassment, discrimination, sexual harassment, or inappropriate behavior should be reported immediately to a counselor, faculty member, staff member, nurse, or member of the leadership team so they can be addressed promptly and appropriately.

How does MWROC help campers feel safe and supported?

Our counselors, faculty, staff, nurse, and leadership team work together to ensure that every camper feels welcomed, included, and valued. We strive to create a culture where kindness, respect, encouragement, and personal growth are the norm.

At MWROC, our goal is not only to help campers grow as musicians, but also to help them build confidence, form meaningful connections, and feel a true sense of belonging.

REGISTRATION AND PREPARATION

What happens after I register?

Once you register, you’ll receive a confirmation email with important information about next steps. As camp gets closer, we’ll send details about placement auditions, music, travel information, housing, schedules, and everything else you’ll need to prepare for an amazing week.

We know attending camp can feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time, so we’ll guide you through the process every step of the way.

What is the placement audition and when do I get the audition materials?

The placement audition helps us assign you to one of our two orchestras, and create ensembles and classes that are the best fit for your current skill level. It’s not about being “good enough” to attend camp—it’s simply a tool to help us place you where you’ll have the most success and growth.

Information about placement audition materials will either be included in your confirmation email or sent to registered campers several months prior to camp.

When do I receive the camp music?

Camp music – for our final concert with both orchestras – is typically shared approximately 2-3 weeks before camp starts. You’ll receive everything you need with plenty of time to prepare before arriving at camp.

When do I receive the Camp Handbook?

The Camp Handbook is typically sent several months before camp and contains important information about schedules, housing, packing lists, travel details, policies, and what to expect during your week at MWROC. The closer we get to camp, a link to the Handbook will be included in your confirmation email once you register.

PARTICIPATION AND PROGRAMMING

How many different things can I do at camp?

One of the things that makes MWROC unique is the opportunity to explore multiple areas of interest. Depending on your instrument and schedule, you may participate in ensembles, electives, masterclasses, workshops, jam sessions, performances, and more.

Can I participate in more than one discipline?

Absolutely! Many campers are multi-talented musicians. When you register, you’ll be asked about your primary and secondary instrument. For example, if you register as a string player but you also sing, we’ll do our best to help you take advantage of as many opportunities as possible throughout the week.

What is a typical day at MWROC like?

Every day is packed with music, creativity, and inspiration.

A typical day may include orchestra and ensemble (combo) rehearsals, instrument or vocal classes, electives, masterclasses, guest artist presentations, jam sessions, faculty performances, and social activities. There is always something exciting happening, and no two days are exactly alike.

You’ll be immersed in music from morning until night while surrounded by an incredibly supportive community.

TRAVEL AND TRANSPORTATION

What travel arrangements do I need to make?

Campers are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from camp. Most campers either fly into the designated airport or drive directly to camp. Detailed travel information will be provided well in advance.

When should I book my flights?

We recommend booking flights as early as possible. Specific arrival and departure windows will be provided before camp to help you coordinate your travel plans.

Is there transportation between the airport and camp?

Yes! MWROC offers shuttle transportation between the designated airport and camp during specified arrival and departure times. Shuttle details and schedules will be provided before camp.

What if I’m driving?

There are plenty of places to park on campus and, if you drive, you’ll have the freedom to explore the area during off times.

PACKING AND EQUIPMENT

What should I bring to camp?

You’ll need your instrument(s), any required accessories, performance attire, comfortable clothing, toiletries, medications, and personal items for the week. A complete packing list is included in the Camp Handbook.

How many instruments should I bring?

Bring the instrument(s) you plan to participate with during camp. Many campers bring both acoustic and electric instruments if they have them, but it’s not required. If you’re unsure what to bring, we’re happy to help.

I’m a cellist or bass player. How do I get my instrument to camp?

We’ve got you covered!

Thanks to our partnership with a local music store, FREE rental acoustic cellos and basses are available for MWROC campers who need them. This makes it much easier for campers who may not want to travel with a large instrument.

If you’re traveling by air or have specific concerns about logistics, just reach out—we’re happy to help you figure out the best option for your situation.

Will there be electrics for me to try at camp?

Yes! One of the most exciting parts of MWROC is the opportunity to experience Mark Wood’s electric instruments firsthand. We have a nice selection of electrics and amps for you to try out for a class or a performance.

Can I purchase an electric instrument at camp?

Yes. Wood Violins always has a presence at MWROC and Mark Wood’s signature instruments are typically available for purchase during camp. Our team can answer questions, help you compare models, and assist you in finding the right instrument for your needs.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Do you offer scholarships?

Yes! Through the Mark Wood Music Foundation and some other amazing organizations, a limited number of scholarships and financial assistance opportunities may be available each year. We encourage interested campers to apply early, as funds are limited.
