We’re thrilled to welcome Robb Janov as a guest faculty member this year! We’ve known Robb for years and he is an extraordinary artist!
Robb Janov is not easy to categorize. He’s a D’Addario Orchestral artist, a PBS NewsHour-featured educator, a Netflix and Nickelodeon music coach, and an actor who has shared the screen with Natalie Portman, Ed Harris and Minka Kelly. On stage, he does something audiences have to see to believe — building a thunderous full-band sound live from scratch, through electric violin and vocal live-looping, solo, start to finish.
As a Performer Robb captivates audiences building live-looped, immersive grooves that pulse with soul, spontaneity, and joy. His performances roam freely across genres from gypsy jazz and Latin to rock, soul and funk-fusion, animated by a deep, uninhibited musicality that stops people in their tracks. He has performed at Meow Wolf, Jazz Under the Stars, the International Balloon Fiesta, and TEDxABQ. He was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago for four seasons and performed with Indiana University’s orchestras.
As a Film & TV Music Coach, Actor & Composer Robb has served as music coach and consultant for the Nickelodeon series The Really Loud House and Netflix’s Ransom Canyon, and has acted, performed violin, and composed music for the Natalie Portman film Jane Got a Gun. He also acted and performed violin alongside Ed Harris in Sweetwater. (Robb’s IMDb page)
As an Educator Drawing on a Master’s degree in Education and a background in child development and at-risk youth, Robb created Rock and Rhythm, a national award-winning middle school program that has inspired underserved public school students through innovative music education for 27 years. What began with 30 students in 1996 grew into six full daily sections — and prompted Albuquerque Public Schools to construct a 2,700 square-foot rehearsal and performance facility built specifically for the program. Featured on PBS NewsHour, ¡Colores!, public radio, multiple local newscasts and in two TEDx Talks, it has become a national model for inclusive music education. Janov has been named a PBS American Graduate Champion and an ING/Voya Unsung Hero, and has received grants from the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, the Mockingbird Foundation, and others. He has presented at American String Teachers Association national conferences and international music education summits in Adelaide and Bayreuth. To expand the program’s reach, he launched the Rock & Rhythm Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
